Career Presentation

WALT: Research about the career we want to do when we are older, then present it.
Reflection: I found this extremely fun, but it took me a long time because I changed my career from saving tiger to the a wildlife photographer. I also found this hard, because I had to find the correct photos for the background because I had to make sure you could read the writing. next I think I can do better on putting more information about me.

Google Docs Ninja Challenge!

WALT: Use google docs correctly and find out how to add things to a google doc, and try to be a google doc ninja. REFLECTION: This was very challenging, but very interesting learning about new things. I learnt heaps of stuff that I did not no you could do. There were lots of short cuts that would be very handy to use. I have not finished this yet because I ran out of time. But this was fun to do.

Writing to the Northland Age

Walt- I am learning to write a level 4 story about our Wellington trip for the Northland age

Huia Whanau Wellington Trip

By Zhara Watson & John Brits

Kia-Ora we are Zhara and John and we are Year Eight students from Kaingaroa School in the Far North. We had a massive goal this year which was to fundraise as much money as possible so we could have a fantastic time on our class trip in Wellington. Our school makes a trip to Wellington every two years so that the senior students can experience first hand, what the capital city has to offer. Our fundraising was full steam ahead from the beginning of Term one. First we started off by selling Whittakers chocolate to our community. In Term two we held our annual school disco, thanks to the Friends of Kaingaroa School. Next, we brought up an ice skating rink to the Te Ahu Centre, this made most of our fundraising money. Finally we started a hot lunch business at school every Tuesday and Friday, that was such a good fundraiser that we are carrying it on for other class trips.

On Monday the 29th of October we met bright and early at school to board out bus to the Bay of Islands Airport in Kerikeri. The vibe in the bus was special, some of us were scared to fly while others were excited. We had flights via Auckland to Wellington and we were scheduled to land around lunch time. Everything went to plan and we were happy to arrive at the Wellington Top Ten at 2pm. After we got settled in we walked to Jumporama (which was coincidently right next to the campsite). We had lots of fun bouncing off the walls and slam dunking at Jumporama.

The next few days were full of adventures and activities. We got up very early to walk to the train station everyday which took 30 minutes and got everyone in the mood for a busy day ahead. On Tuesday we visited Zealandia which is a sanctuary that has lots of native birds, rode the Cable car, visited Te Papa our National Museum, the best exhibition was the battle of Gallipoli in Turkey. Te Papa, Te Papa was so cool it had so much stuff, our favorite part in Te Papa was That was so interesting- they had these realistic statues, with a sign that said “please don't touch”, but of course we couldn’t help but touch. The statues were so life-like, they were made out of rubber, the hair was made out of horsehair and the arm and leg hair was made of real human hair.

Wednesday took us back into our capital city. We were lucky enough to see the original Treaty of Waitangi in the National Library, we toured around the Parliament buildings. Unfortunately we did not bump into our prime minister Jacinda Ardern. Next we put our acting skills into action and presented a news report at Capital E - this was a lot of the classes highlight. We were all very excited to get back to camp that night because it has finally stopped raining and we could play on the giant inflatable pillow at camp.

Thursday, without a doubt, was the best day. We left the camp by 8.30 and drove to laser tag and tenpin bowling. They were both very fun, some people had never been ten pin bowling or played laser tag before, so that was a great experience. After that we drove to H2O Xtreme, it was a huge pool, with heaps of hydro slides, we all thought it was going to be cold but luckily the water was heated. After that exhausting but fun day we went back to camp and had showers, and got into our nice clothes because we were going out to fancy restaurant on top of a big tall hotel, which was a buffet. The food there was so delicious! A huge spread was prepared of meats, Sushi, seafood, salads and the most delectable desserts.

Unfortunately on Friday we had to leave. We did the same thing that we did on Monday but in reverse. Finally, bus full of very tired students arrived back at school to be collected by our parents. We all agreed it was the experience of a lifetime.

We would like to thank all our parents who helped out with fundraising and who joined us on our adventure. Also a huge thank you to our principal Mrs Hancock and our teacher Miss van der Voort who supported us the whole way and helped us in Wellington.

Reflection: I found this hard but I am glade I have finished it, and its going to go in the news papper.

Wellington Locations

Wellington Locations
Walt: Use maps and Put locations on were we are travailing to!

Reflection: I found this easy but it is a bit fidgety to work with, This
would be very handy when you want to know how far it would take
to one place to another. We would use this when we are in Wellington.

Trust me With our Future (2018 Speech)

Trust me With our Future!

WALT: To create a speech using R E E F and to include less pollution, global warming and captive animals.

Intro: Did you know that 100 million marine animals get killed each year by plastic? Did you know that the icebergs in Antarctica are melting, and this accounts for 70% of the worlds ice! Another fact, that you may not be aware of - is that some of you in the audience may be enabling animal cruelty!!
Kia-ora my name is Zhara, and today I am going to be talking to you about plastic pollution, global warming, and captive animals. I am here to convince you, that you can trust me with OUR future. So tighten your socks and get ready to be blown away with unbelievable, devastating facts.

Less pollution is the Best Solution!
Trust me with our future, because I know how we can stop plastic causing pollution. People are treating this world like its a rubbish dump. In 7 years, there is going to be more plastic than fish in the South Pacific ocean, which is terrible. We need to make a change, and when I say make a change, I mean we need to stop using plastic and start using biodegradable plastic, or even better no plastic at all.
When people like you and I, go to the store, you would normally ask for a plastic bag because it's much easier to carry your stuff, but actually a ten cent plastic bag is actually killing 100 dolphins if it flies into the ocean which it is most likely to. So imagine buying 5 plastic bags, that’s potentially killing 500 dolphins. Plastic takes 1000 years to break down.
Imagine, going fishing and catching nothing but plastic, or going surfing and not surfing on water but surfing on waves of plastic how awful would that be. I feel that if we stop using plastic bags now our future will become better for our generation and the generations to come. But if we keep buying plastic bags this world wide problem will become even worse. I hope I have convinced you to make a change and start making this world more livable.

Global Warming
Another reason why you should trust me with our future!
Don’t you just love getting a nice tan in the warm ,relaxing sun? Well not anymore you won’t. Now in 2018, over 4000 people each year are getting skin cancer just in New Zealand. That is about 13 people every day because of global warming. Global warming is killing our environment. You might not think this is a big issue but it's actually one of the worlds biggest problems especially in New Zealand.
There are four greenhouse gases :Methane, Carbon dioxide, Water Vapor, and ozone. If there isn't the same amount of each one, it will cause global warming which is happening now, as there is too much Carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is released when we burn fossil fuel. Carbon dioxide is mostly getting released by cars, fossil fuel, and nuclear chimneys. Every year it gets hotter and hotter because of global warming. If you don't want to get skin cancer and want to help decrease global warming - here are some things you can do to help:
1. Don't sunbath or
Stop burning fossil fuel which is causing global warming. If you want to stop Global warming and get a nice tan without getting skin cancer then plant more trees. Trees will absorb carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. So this is why you should trust me!

Captive animals
My last, but not least reason why you should trust me with our future!
Have you ever abused an animal? I hope most of you would say NO to this question - but let me put it another way. Have you ever been to a circus where animals have been used for tricks, or ridden an elephant in a far away country? Because if you have, then without knowing it, you have helped aid this abuse to animals! We need to stop this right now, and we must educate others about this awful practice.
I do not agree with animal cruelty, especially animal circuses. Animal circuses don’t have any point to it, except for money and our entertainment. Animals like Tigers, lions, elephants, Bears, hippos and many more, all get put into circuses and get tortured. You might think it would be quite cool to watch animals do all these amazing tricks, but not if you knew what went on behind the scenes. Put yourself in their shoes.
You get tortured if you can't do a confusing trick and get your food taken away from you if you mess up. You would live in a tiny cage that you can’t even turn around in. You have to do dangerous tricks like jumping through hoops of fire, or balance on a tightrope. Undercover cameras in circuses have shown that big cats are dragged by heavy chains around their necks and even hit with sticks, and whipped until they bleed. What is entertaining about that!!!!

Conclusion:
So with those three reasons that I have discussed, you can be reassured that you can trust me with OUR future!
We can all make a difference, by changing a few things, and I hope that I have explained this well. Firstly - change from using plastic bags to paper bags, plant some trees, and lastly, do not visit a circus or ride a captive animal! These simple changes can make a world of difference!
So trust me, Zhara, with our future!! Besides, I am better looking than President Trump!!

Reflection: I found this very fun to write because I like to talk a lot, speciously in writing. I think that next time I can work on not waffling so much(writing so much) And I think that I done well on making it make sense and putting some personalise information in.

Ice Skating Fundraiser for our Wellington trip

Ice Skating Fundraiser for our Wellington Trip
Walt: Advertise our ice Skating Fundraiser

The reason we made these posters were to advertise our ice skating tour in Kaitaia to fundraise for our Wellington trip in term four. I enjoyed doing this because it was creative and fun to create. Some parts I did find a bit difficult because I only had one day to do it because I was away for to days. I helped a couple of people as well (Isaac, Jaykahn) Next time I think I need to work on changing the fonts to make it look more effective.

Drawing that I done For the Wax-eye

WALT: Write a persuasive piece of writing.

                                                                    Wax Eye
Do you have any idea what a wax-eye? No, it’s not a eye full of gooey sleep. A Wax-eye is a friendly bird with a white feathered ring around its eye. They are slightly smaller than a sparrow, the maori name for the wax-eye is tauhou. If you read on you will find out more about their habitat, their appearance and their predators it has a few threats, but luckily not to many.

Firstly I would like to talk about the Wax-eyes diet and their habitat. The Wax-eye eats mainly insects and fruit nectar. They live in deep forests of open grassland. Although they feed on fruit nectar and not meat, they visit bird feeders more than any other species in New Zealand. They are native to New Zealand, you find them in the North Island. The most populated area is the Far North.

Secondly I would like to talk about their appearance and their behaviour. Although wax-eyes are very small, they are very strong, they flew from Australia and the South Pacific Islands which is approximately 4,163 km away from us. The wax-eye has a olive green eye with a white feathered circle around it, they have a fine tabberd bill, and a brush tipped tongue like many other birds. Their feathers are a green olive colour and sometimes yellow. Males have slightly brighter plumage than a female. Personally I think that the wax-eye is a very elegant and beautiful bird

Thirdly, there are many predators out there that kill the wax-eye. The main predators are cats, stoats, rats and morepork. Lucky, the population of the wax-eye is quite high, so they are not on their way to being endangered or extinct. There are protection centers like Zealandia in Wellington. Sanctuaries like these have high walls and underground fencing so no predators can get in. Birds such as the wax eye can still fly out but have a safe place to return to.

I hope I have convinced you to look after the wax-eye. This little bird has the strength of 50 tigers and the beauty of a peacock. Although we do not need to worry about it’s extinction we do need to recognise it as a New Zealand native bird. You can help keep them safe by putting a bell on you cats collar (If they have a collar.) or make rat and stoat traps were the wax eye mainly lives. Thank you for reading all about the wax-eye.

My Turtle drawing that I done on google drawings.

My Turtle drawing that I done on google drawings.

What is your Favourite

by looking at this chart it clearly shows that netball is the most popular and soccer is the least
popular.
I was actually quite surprised about this because their are more boys in the class than girls and most people liked netball better than rugby. I knew that soccer was going to be the least popular because not many people play soccer in our class. Rugby is the second most popular and basketball is the third.

Sea Turtles

Sea Turtles

Intro

I would tell you a joke but there is no time for joking around now,
our sea turtles are dying because of us. Sea turtles have to get
straws pulled out of their nose, they have to starve because
the plastic inside of them is strangling them (here's a YouTube
example) (YouTube). I am going to tell you about sea turtles
and their population, what they look like and why they are dying.

How many Turtles die each year from Plastic and how we can fix this?

The estimate of how many sea turtles are dying each year is
over 4,600. There are 7 species of turtles, all sea turtles over
the world are almost extinct especially the yangtze giant
softshell turtle, there are only three left in the world.
We can fix the population of sea turtles dropping by using
paper bags instead of plastic bags and instead of using plastic
straw we can use paper straws.

How they are dying

Cruel people slaughter the sea turtles for their eggs,
shells and skin just for money. They also kill them for their
meat to use for bait. When fishermen and commercial fishers
are fishing they often get lots of sea turtles caught up in their
net, dead. Over 250,000 are captured each year by fishermen.
When we put our plastic in the bin that goes straight to the
landfill allowing the wind to pick it up and blow into sea,
then the sea turtles think its a jellyfish and eats it.

What turtles look like?

All turtles have a very glossy rock hard shell.
They have yellowy, orange stripes or spotted skin.
Its small head with beady eyes bulging out of its shell when
its about to eat. When it is scared or if it is tired it will merge
its head back into its shell in a hurry.

Conclusion

To conclude I have told you about how many turtles are left
in the world, why they are dying and where they live.
Turtles are kind natured and almost extinct. I say we stop
using plastic and start saving the turtles.

Netball Report

Netball Report

INTRO

Come on you can do this, you can get that goal, YESSSSSSSSS! Finally they got a goal. If you like playing
sports I would recommend this is a great sport for you, this sport is called netball. I am going to tell you about the
position and each players role. I will inform you how to play the game and finally all about our beloved Silver Ferns
and their success as a team.

Positions And What They Do

There are many positions to play in netball, there is Goal keeper, Goal Shooter, Wing Attack, Wing Defence, Goal
Attack, Goal Defence and last but not least Centre. Centre is allowed everywhere on the court just not in the half
circles. Look at the image down below to see where the starting positions are. Goal Keeper has to try and stop the
Goal Shooter on the other team from getting the ball into the hoop allowing the other team to get a point.
Goal Shoot simply has to try and get the ball in the hoop so they get a goal. Centre is the main player, they start in
the middle of the court and when the whistle blows, centre will then jump into the circle and pass to either Wing
Attack or Goal Attack. But if they’re not free because the other player is defending, you look behind you and pass
\to Goal Defence or Wing Defence, and they will try and get the ball down to the goal and get a point.

How To Play

To start this game the two team captains from each team will go head to head in a $2 flipping coin challenge or
Rock, Paper, Scissors. The captain that wins one of the rounds gets to choose ball or goal. It is always advisable
to choose the ball. There are many ways to lose the ball and many ways to get the ball back. If you are holding
the ball for over 3 seconds it’s hand over to the other team. 3 seconds may seem like a very short time but when
you’re playing on the court it is actually quite a long time. Also if the other player has the ball and you’re defending
the player you have to be three feet away otherwise you will be called up for obstruction.
That means when that player is about to pass you have to stand next to them and not defend, but as soon as
they pass you can keep playing. Lastly you can’t touch the person with the ball or you will be called up for contact
and you do the same thing as you do for obstruction.

NZ Silver Ferns Netball

Netball is a very popular sport after Rugby In New Zealand. The Silver Ferns are our New Zealand netball team.
This year in the Commonwealth games the Silver Ferns came 4th. It was the first time they had ever not come a
place for over 30 years. This year they got 2 golds and 3 silvers. But for the World Cup, they got  4 golds, 8 silver,
and 1 bronze. So if you are recommending to play netball, and if you train hard, maybe when you’re older you can
play with the Silver Ferns and be famous.

Conclusion

To conclude, I have told you all about how to play netball, what the positions are and some of the rules.  I
have also told you about our very famous Silver Fern netball team. This is a very fun and energetic game. If you
are a fast runner I think you should try and find a Netball team near you and try out different positions.

This is Zhara Watson reporting to you from newshub live at six.
